When your check engine light comes on you don't want to ignore it. It's your car's way of telling you that something's wrong and needs to be fixed sooner than later-so don't put it off! If you do, you could cause more damage to your ride. If your check engine light is blinking, it means that it's a more immediate problem and needs to be fixed ASAP. Otherwise, don't panic-your car's specialist will take care of the problem. A good way to prevent problems (or at least drastically reduce them) is to keep up on your regular brake maintenance. Get your brakes serviced at least every 12,000 miles, or if it's been over a year. That way you will have piece of mind knowing that your brakes are in good shape and that you and your passengers are safe. Just don't put it off because prevention is better than treatment.
